Stone-built orangeries normally with lantern roofs were the precursors to conservatories and date back to the 18th Century. Orangeries were built to protect valuable and exotic plants and fruits during the winter months which early plant collectors bought back from around the world. The first orangeries had large windows and doors within a stone building.
Contemporary orangeries retain that unique historical character that sets them apart from conservatories, the distinction between a conservatory and an orangery has evolved over time and now orangeries are normally defined as having one or more lantern roofs.
These lantern roofs rest on supporting joists within a flat roof perimeter, which is set within a heavier framework than a conservatory. Sometimes even today orangeries will be stone or brick built with windows inserted as you will see from some of our examples.
The Orangeries of today can be used more effectively as a permanent room kitchen extension, dinning room etc
Orangeries can be free standing or part of your property the typical starting price for a small orangery is £20,000 we offer a full design and planning application service.
